NOVA Combat, as a centre for Martial Arts excellence in Gloucester, has been established for over 20 years!
Previously known as Longlevens Martial Arts Centre, NOVA had its roots in Wado-Ryu Karate/Jujitsu and Kick Boxing.
Over the years, through practising a wider range of Martial Arts, we are able to provide our members with more than just Karate, Jujitsu and Kick Boxing.
What Is Wado-Ryu?
Wado-Ryu, meaning "The Way of Peace and Harmony", is a Traditional Japanese style of Karate created in 1929 by Grand Master Hironori Ōtsuka.
The Wado style evolved from Okinawan Karate (Te), the foundation of many modern Karate derivatives.
Whereas most Karate styles exclusively practice striking based techniques (Punching & Kicking). Wado-Ryu also incorporates elements of Grappling and Restraint techniques, which later influenced the creation of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA).
With this philosophy, Wado-Ryu could arguably be classed as a style of Jiujitsu rather that Karate. However, at the time, Karate was quickly becoming a popular Martial Art to practice. Naturally, in order to promote the style to wider audiences, Wado-Ryu has since been known as a style of Karate.
Wado-Ryu was introduced to Europe in the 1950s/60s by the late Tatsuo Suzuki (1928-2011), and has been popular around the world since.
There is only your way!
No matter your body type, gender, or physical ability, different approaches to training will suit different people.
We believe in forging Martial Artists with an open view in mind. The key to holistic development, is not through one Martial Art, or one way of training, but by finding the way that fits you!
OUR GOAL
At NOVA, we believe in Martial Arts and Self Defence access for all.
We want to provide all our members with a holistic approach to Martial Arts training.
With enough passion and commitment, anyone has the ability to succeed in Martial Arts!
